Spreading urea before rain
Spread when the forecast gives you 5–10 mm within about 48 hours. That's the fall that washes the nitrogen into the root zone before it can gas off. Miss it and a slice of your fertiliser bill leaves as ammonia — and the cruel part is that a light shower is worse than no rain at all.
Why urea wants rain
A urea granule sitting on the surface is doing nothing yet. It needs water twice over: first to dissolve it, then to carry the dissolved nitrogen down into the soil, where clay and organic matter grab hold of the ammonium and your plants' roots can reach it. Rain is the delivery mechanism, not a bonus — until a proper fall arrives, your nitrogen is parked on the surface where the weather can take it.
So the spreading question is really a forecast question: is there a fall coming that's big enough to finish the delivery?
The rule: about 5–10 mm within 48 hours
For most paddocks, 5–10 mm in a single fall within about 48 hours of spreading gets the job done. Treat 48 hours as the conservative read: the longer urea waits on the surface, the more nitrogen you lose, so losses climb by the day and sooner is always better. On bare or grazed ground with little trash, the bottom of that range is enough. Under a standing crop or heavy stubble, lift the target to 12–15 mm — the canopy and trash intercept the first few millimetres, so it takes more to carry the urea through to the soil.
You want that rain steady, not savage. A 40 mm dump isn't a bigger win: on anything but flat, absorbent country a hard burst runs off, taking dissolved nitrogen with it, and can waterlog heavy soils into the bargain. A gentle soaking fall beats an intense one every time.
The worst case: 1–2 mm
The most expensive forecast is the light one. A millimetre or two of drizzle — or even a heavy dew — is enough to dissolve the granule and start the chemistry, but nowhere near enough to wash the nitrogen in. The dissolved urea sits on the surface, the sun comes out, the paddock dries, and the nitrogen gases off. Dry granules waiting on dry soil for a proper fall are safer than granules that have been wet and dried where they landed.
A shower is not a wash-in. If all the forecast offers is 1–2 mm, holding the spreader is usually the better call. Spreading "because some rain is coming" is how good urea becomes bad air.
Volatilisation: where the nitrogen goes
Once urea meets moisture, the soil enzyme urease converts it to ammonium carbonate, which breaks down and leaves ammonia sitting at the surface. If a fall has washed the nitrogen down into the profile, the soil holds it. If it hasn't, the ammonia evaporates — fastest as the surface dries through the heat of the day.
When the rain misses, losses of 10–20% of your applied nitrogen are common, and Australian trials have measured far worse when conditions line up against you. The things that push losses up:
- A moist surface that's drying out. Wet soil starts the reaction; the dry-down releases the gas. Spreading onto a damp paddock about to bake is riskier than spreading onto a dry one ahead of rain.
- Warm, windy weather. Heat drives the evaporation and wind carries the ammonia away.
- High-pH soils. The reaction runs faster on alkaline and limy surfaces.
- Heavy trash. Stubble carries high urease activity, so urea caught on residue converts quickly — and it's the urea least likely to get washed to soil.
If the fall genuinely won't come, urease-inhibitor-treated products can slow the conversion and buy you up to a couple of weeks of waiting, and incorporation removes the risk where the crop allows it. Rates and products are your agronomist's call.
Reading the forecast for a spreading window
Two different questions hide inside a rain forecast, and spreading depends on both:
- How certain is the rain? A frontal band that every model agrees on is a spreading forecast. A "possible shower, 40%" is not — that's exactly the setup that delivers the 1–2 mm worst case.
- How much and how fast? You're after that steady 5–10 mm (more over stubble), not a thunderstorm total that arrives in twenty minutes and leaves by the creek.
The practical window is often the still day or two ahead of a front: calm enough air for the spinner to throw an even pattern across the full bout width, dry granules on dry soil, and the band arriving behind you to wash it all in. Gusty crosswinds on spreading day stripe the paddock — you'll see it in the green six weeks later.
